Nothing New ... (Psalm 12:1-5)

Today's scripture: Psalm 12:1-5

Ecclesiastes 1:9 tells us that "Everything that happens has happened before; nothing is new, nothing under the sun" (CEV). This is so very true. Centuries ago, David wrote words that we could be praying today: "Help, O
Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth!" (NLT, Psalm 12:1).

Do those words resonate with you as they do with me? It seems like, more and more, true Bible-believing Christ followers are fewer and fewer in number. Many call themselves "Christians," but they don't really know what that means.

So-called Christians think nothing of lying on resumes or cheating on tests. They don't think living with someone outside of marriage is wrong. They get drunk Saturday night and sit in church on Sunday.

It's heartbreaking ... but nothing this world hasn't seen before. When we read God's word, we see time and time again when people who claimed to follow God failed to live as He commanded. The book of Judges illustrates the pattern of the nation of Israel: turning from God, crying out for deliverance, God's provision ... and then the nation's turning from God again. Then, we read of the many prophets who came to warn God's people of His discipline.

So why should I be surprised that those who claim to know God fail to serve Him? Why should I be surprised that "...
the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth!"?

I shouldn't be ... for, indeed, there is nothing new under the sun.
